OAU JUPEB PROGRAMME: Get admitted into 200 level

Applications are hereby invited from suitably qualified candidates for admission into Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB) programme for 2015/2016 Session. The programme is handled by Obafemi Awolowo University.

Eligible Candidates must possess minimum of 5 Credits at maximum of two sittings in at least 5 subjects (inclusive of English Language) relevant to the candidates’ desired course of study in the University.

The Programme leads to the award of JUPEB Certificate which enables candidate gain Direct Entry admissions into Obafemi Awolowo University and other JUPEB-affiliated Universities in Nigeria and other Universities abroad.

The duration of the Programme is a minimum of one academic session of two Semesters.

Unilorin to Host the NASA International space Apps Challenge

The International Space Apps Challenge is an international mass collaboration focused on space exploration that takes place over 48hours in cities around the world. The event embraces collaborative problem solving with a goal of producing relevant open source solutions to address global needs applicable to both life on earth and life in space.

OAU: Commences 2014/2015 session May

According to the University website, the Senate of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has approved that the University should resume for the 2014/2015 academic session on Sunday, May 3rd, 2015

Alafara wins MISRA Award of Excellence

The Deputy Director of the University of Ilorin Central Research Laboratory, Dr. Baba Alafara, has won the MISRA Award of Excellence in Electro- and Hydro-Bio processing research.

Dr. Alafara's research on processing of chalcopyrite ore using hydrometallurgical method earned him the Award, which was presented to him during the 2015 edition of the International Conference on Mineral Processing Technology (MPT) in Visakhapatnam, India, between March 12 and 14. The conference was sponsored by the Indian Institute of Mineral Engineers (IIME).

The research endeavour, which involves leaching, solvent extraction and precipitation, was carried out to recover copper from its ore for use in the production of high grade copper oxide.

Dr. Alafara presented a paper on the research, which he carried out in conjunction with Prof. Folahan Adekola, Dr. Rafiu Bale and Mr. Kuranga Ayinla.

The organisers described the research as excellent, brilliant and knowledge-based. They said the product obtained (copper oxide) could be applied as pigment in ceramic industries, cuprammonium hydroxide solution for rayon, p-type semi-conductor, dry cell batteries production and as safety disposal of hazardous materials.

The paper was then adjudged as the best in Electro- and Hydro-Bio processing session, which was sponsored by the IIME. He was presented with MISRA Award of excellence in Electro- and Hydro-Bio processing research.

Katibi wins ISD Global Education Award

Dr. Oludolapo Sherifat Katibi, A Consultant Paediatrician/Lecturer in the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital,has won the 2015 International Society of Dermatology (ISD) Global Education Award.

According to a notification letter by the Chairman of ISD Education Committee, Mr. Larry Gibson, the award will be presented to her at the ISD Sister Society Meeting on June 8, 2015 at Vancouver Convention Center, Canada.

Dr. Katibi won the award based on the abstract, “Spectrum of Paediatric Skin Diseases: Implications for Education of Healthcare Providers in an HIV Endemic Setting”, which she presented at the ILDS World Congress of Dermatology in Vancouver, Canada.

In addition, Dr. Katibi was also selected to receive a Poster Exhibit Scholarship, as well as the L'Oréal Scholarship, which provide additional funds to support her participation in the Academy's 73rd Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology held at The Moscone Center, San Francisco, California between March 20 and March 24, 2015.

Rainbow eucalyptus: A landscape design element

Rainbow eucalyptus (botanical name Eucalyptus deglupta) is known for its unique multi-hued bark. It belongs to the family Myrtaceae. At different times the patches of the outer bark are shed annually revealing a bright green inner bark. This then darkens and matures to surprisingly give different colours such as blue, purple, orange and then maroon tones.

It is naturally distributed through New Guines, Seram, New Britain, Sulawesi and Mindanao. It is mainly grown for pulpwood used in paper making. It is a landscape design element due to its multi-coloured streaks that cover the trunk.

During the world war two, the Russians trained dogs to run under German tanks with bombs on their backs. Sadly, the tanks the dogs were trained to run under were Russian tanks, so they ended up running under the Russian tanks and blowing them up instead.

Muhammadu Buhari was born December 17, 1942 in Daura, Nigeria. After being involved in the coup that ousted Yakubu Gowon he was appointed military governor of north eastern state in 1975. He was appointed federal commissioner for petroleum resources by General Olusegun Obasanjo in March 1976. In 1977 became the military secretary at the supreme headquarters, which was the seat of government. Buhari was unanimously chosen to be the new head of state, when the military was not satisfied with level of corrupt politicians in the government in December, 1983.

His journey into the civilian politics started in 2003, when ran for the office of the president; he was defeated by the incumbent, Olusegun Obasanjo of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) (2003 Election result: 24,456,140-Obasanjo; 12,710,022-Buhari). He was defeated in 2007 by the PDP’s candidate, Umaru Yar’Adua when he again ran for the office of the president (2007 Election result:  24,638,063-Yar’Adua; 6,605,299-Buhari). He also ran again in 2011 but was defeated by Goodluck Jonathan of the PDP’s candidate (2011 Election result: 22,495,187-Jonathan; 12,214,853-Buhari). Contesting again for the fourth time in 2015, Muhammadu Buhari defeated the incumbent Goodluck Jonathan to become the president-elect and the 15th Head of State (2015 Election result: 12,853,162-Jonathan 15,424,921-Buhari)

After gaining independence in 1991 from the former soviet state, Azerbaijan became a member of the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the Islamic Development Bank and the Asian Development Bank. The banking system of Azerbaijan consists of the Central Bank of Azerbaijan, commercial banks and non-banking credit organizations. Its large oil reserve also did add value.

It was officially introduced in 1999; the multinational Euro didn’t begin changing hands until January 2001. After a rocky start, the Euro has gained on the dollar for years. The currency is the official currency of Eurozone that comprises of 17 countries. Some these include Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain.

One Lats is currently worth $1.97 US. Latvia: country of northeastern Europe, one of the Baltic States, has entered the process to phase out the Lat in favor of the Euro, which is expected to be the official currency around 2012.

3. Omani Rial (1 OMR = 2.60 USD)

Oman: a country occupying the southeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula at the confluence of the Persian Gulf and Arabian Sea. It has a strategically important position at the mouth of the Persian Gulf. It has had its currency exchange rate pegged to the dollar at a rate of 1 OMR = $2.60 US since 1986. With that pegged relationship holding firm, seems as though the Rial’s fate remains tied to the fate of the dollar.

2. Bahrain Dinar (1 BHD= 2.65 USD)

Bahrain industry relies on petroleum production and refining, as well as financial services and construction. With an exchange rate to the US dollar at around $2.65 for one Bahraini Dinar, it’s the second most valuable currency in the world.

Kuwait being situated in one of the driest areas on the surface of the earth, never ceases to amaze admirers why it has the world’s most valuable currency, but, we fail to realize that they have nearly one-tenth of the World’s proven oil reserves. The Kuwait currency is currently pegged to the dollar.

Newly licensed private Universities in Nigeria

The Minster of Education, Ibrahim Shekarau, has said that the presentation of licenses to the nine universities was to create space for effective mentoring and qualitative growth within the first five years of operation. He said further that newly approved private universities will be affiliated to older generation universities for mentoring (areas of mentoring will be academics, administration and programme implemented by the National University Commission (NUC).

Permanent licenses would only be issued to well-structured institutions after three years of probation, the minister said.

The Nine Universities are

• Augustine University, Ilara, Lagos
• Chrisland University, Owode, Ogun State
• Christopher University, Mowe, Ogun State
• Hallmark University, Ijebu-Itele, Ogun State
• Kings University, Ode-Omu, Osun State
• Micheal and Cecilia Ibru University, Owhrode, Delta State
• Mountain Top Unversity, Makogi/Oba, Ogun state
• Ritman University, Ikot-Epene, Akwa- Ibom State
• Summit University, Offa, Kwara State.

Nigeria had 40 Federal, 39 State and 50 private universities before now.

INEC smart card reader: Its function and role

Saturday 28th March, Nigerians will decide by casting their votes to their respective choice of candidates. The Independent national electoral commission (INEC) says it has adopted the use of smart card reader to verify the permanent voter’s card (PVC) due to speculations that fake PVCs have been produced and are already in circulation. INEC said this model will help actualize its campaign on ensuring transparency. Experts have said that INEC has adopted biometrics methods in countries like Ghana, Kenya, Sierra Leone, Somaliland, Mozambique, Zambia, Malawi, Rwanda and Senegal.

To ensure that the readers perform up to the expected standard, they have been subjected to integrity test.  Without leaving any stone unturned, INEC procured an additional 20,000 card readers, apart from the 152,000 acquired. 35,000 backup batteries were also acquired in case there is any occurrence.

The role and function of the card reader include the following:

- The card readers make use of sim cards and have in-built memories, thus poor mobile connection is no problem.

- They are deliberately programmed to work between time frames, and would not work after that set of time.

- The card readers will be pre-configured by INEC staff for polling units before polling officials arrive.

- The smart card reader sends data of people accredited to INEC’s central server ahead of counting of the ballot papers, preventing linkages and exchanging to rig elections.

- Before an individual will be allowed to vote, the thumb print of the voter will be taken with the device and it must match with the one on the PVC.

- Accreditation of voters will last only for 5 hours but card readers have been designed to last for 12 hours if the battery is fully charged.

- INEC officials have revealed that each device has the capacity for the details of about 750 voters which means it can only verify the details of the voters whose data have been entered into the device.

Parents aiding students in examination malpractice in India

About well over above 600 students have been dismissed from school in the eastern state of Bihar, in India. The student were among more than 1.4 million high school students taking their 10^th grade school finals.

The modus operandi which the caught students used was through smuggling of textbooks or scraps of paper to be used for cheating, this was said by the police and education officials.

The gory part was that friends, parents and other relatives of the teenagers were seen climbing the sides of some exam centres on Wednesday and Thursday as they tried to reach the windows of the examination halls were the students were taking their exams. Police posted outside test centres were even seen being bribed to look the other way.

Top Economies in the World

Surprisingly, some of the world’s leading and most innovative nations didn't make the list. But the fact that some of the richest countries also have notably high poverty rates and profound income inequality makes it clear that, on a national level, being rich doesn't necessarily mean being better off.

The problem of asymmetry distribution stretches forth to the world economy playing fields as only 12 countries economy makes up two-thirds of the world’s economy according to the World Bank as at 2014. Titan: the only moon to have clouds and a dense atmosphere

Titan referred to as the biggest moon of Saturn in the solar system. Titan was discovered telescopically in 1655 by Christian Huygens a Dutch astronomer. This moon was named for the titans of Greek mythology (which meant the children of Uranus and Gaea and their descendants). This moon is known in the solar system as the only natural satellite to have cloud and a dense atmosphere. 

Amazingly the titan is bigger than planet mercury and, in significant ways; it resembles a planet than a typical moon. No trace of Oxygen on the satellite, but clear evidence of stable bodies of surface liquid has been found. There is a large amount of nitrogen in its atmosphere; methane and ethane clouds and nitrogen-rich organic smog. Climate which includes wind and rain creates surface features similar to those of Earth: surface features include dunes, rivers, lakes, seas (probably of liquid methane and ethane), and deltas. Its rotation period is synchronous.

The University of Lagos has emerged the first and best in Nigeria, in the latest web ranking of universities across the world released by 4 International Colleges & Universities (4icu) organization.

The latest ranking released by the web-based body at http://www.4icu.org placed the University in the 1st position in Nigeria and 20^th in Africa.

The 4icu ranking is a measure of an institution’s presence on the web. It is computed using a number of parameters that revolve round the quantum and quality of electronic resources on a website as well as access to such resources.

USAID Awards Partnership Research Grant to the University of Benin

In recognition of its leading role in research and capacity building in Africa, the University of Benin has been awarded a United States Agency for International Development (USAID) research grant of about 5.7 million naira to conduct research in antimalarial drug discovery from local plants and herbal resources. The award represents a part of the larger Africa-U.S. Higher Education Partnership program of USAID that is administered by Higher Education for Development (HED), a division of the American Council on Education. 

This award puts UNIBEN in partnership with The University of Mississippi, affectionately known as “Ole-Miss” and a leading United States research university founded in 1848. The partnership project will also engage two other West African higher education and research institutions; the International Institute for Water and Environmental Engineering (2iE) in Burkina Faso, and the Federal University of Technology (FUT-Minna) in Minna, Nigeria.

The most ethically responsible federal university in Nigeria

Yet another honour rolled in for the University of Ilorin last Wednesday (March 11, 2015) as the better by far institution was named the “Most Ethically Responsible Federal University” in Nigeria in the year 2014.

The institution's Vice-Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), was also honoured with the Award of “Ambassador of Ethics and Conscience” in recognition of his sterling performance at the helm of the University.

The Centre for Ethics and Self Value Orientation (CESVO),which gave the two awards, also named the Registrar of the University, Mr. Emmanuel Obafemi, as one of the “200 Most Ethically Responsible Civil Servants in Nigeria”.

While presenting the awards, the Executive Director of CESVO, Prince Salih Musa Yakubu, commended the Vice-Chancellor for the wisdom with which he has been propelling the University forward.

Prince Yakubu disclosed that his group had heard so much about the University of Ilorin and that it therefore decided to carry out a secret and independent investigation to verify the claims of the University. 

He said that the group was not disappointed, as the University scored 87% in the public administration appraisal score card, noting that this prompted the Gold Medal award to the Vice-Chancellor for his good work in public administration.
