Buhari, Muhammadu: Nigeria's New President-Elect

Muhammadu Buhari was born December 17, 1942 in Daura, Nigeria. After being involved in the coup that ousted Yakubu Gowon he was appointed military governor of north eastern state in 1975. He was appointed federal commissioner for petroleum resources by General Olusegun Obasanjo in March 1976. In 1977 became the military secretary at the supreme headquarters, which was the seat of government. Buhari was unanimously chosen to be the new head of state, when the military was not satisfied with level of corrupt politicians in the government in December, 1983.


His journey into the civilian politics started in 2003, when ran for the office of the president; he was defeated by the incumbent, Olusegun Obasanjo of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) (2003 Election result: 24,456,140-Obasanjo; 12,710,022-Buhari). He was defeated in 2007 by the PDP’s candidate, Umaru Yar’Adua when he again ran for the office of the president (2007 Election result:  24,638,063-Yar’Adua; 6,605,299-Buhari). He also ran again in 2011 but was defeated by Goodluck Jonathan of the PDP’s candidate (2011 Election result: 22,495,187-Jonathan; 12,214,853-Buhari). Contesting again for the fourth time in 2015, Muhammadu Buhari defeated the incumbent Goodluck Jonathan to become the president-elect and the 15th Head of State (2015 Election result: 12,853,162-Jonathan 15,424,921-Buhari)
